Parts of Upper Teesdale are a Natural Nature Reserve for good reason. This stunning landscape is the home to some of the rarest wildlife on our shores.
Bird lovers will enjoy a trip to Natural England's Moor House where you can find birds such as the Golden Plover, Ring Ouzel and Black Grouse. Grassholme Reservoir is also famed for its bird sightings, including Ospreys. This area is also known for rare arctic-alpine flora, a remnant of the ice age as well as England's largest juniper wood.
Less than 5 miles from Romaldkirk, located between Hury and Balderhead reservoirs, is Hannah's Meadow, part of Durham Wildlife Trust. This site, once owned by the well-known Hannah Hauxwell, is an upland hay meadow and grazing pasture that is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Traditional meadow flowers such as ragged robin, wood's crane's-bill, marsh-marigold, yellow-rattle, adder's-tongue fern and globe flower can be seen in June. early July before the meadow is cut. There are also rare species such as frog orchid and moonwort.
