Making the most of a break at the Rose & Crown...

Britain is home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, with unique pastimes and traditions to discover and outdoor activities to enjoy.

While you can dedicate a lifetime to mastering various country pursuits, you don’t have to be a seasoned shooting pro or spend thousands on all the latest hiking gear to be able to enjoy all that the countryside has to offer.

Discover our guide for beginners to get the most out of the countryside.

Choose your destination wisely

If you want to discover a new area of the UK and explore the surrounding countryside, it’s probably best not to start by throwing yourself into a week-long hiking and camping trip without previous experience.

You can make the experience a lot easier and more enjoyable by choosing somewhere warm, welcoming and cosy to base yourself, so after a day out in the elements you still have a comfortable bed to return to and the promise of delicious home-cooked food to refuel while you relax.

Staying with us also means you’ll be able to ask our staff for their recommendations so you can make the most of your time in the local area.

Take a walk

If you’ve never been on a walking holiday, chances are you won’t yet know what distances and difficulties you can handle – but finding that out will be one of the joys of the trip!

Visit an area, like the Durham Dales, with a wide variety of walks, from gentle riverside strolls to serious yomping on rugged fells and build up your confidence as you trek further each day.

You don’t need to worry about investing in extensive kit either – all you really need is a waterproof and windproof coat and a pair of sturdy shoes and you’re good to go.

Sling your hook

Many people think fishing is only for experienced anglers, but it can also be a fantastic day out for beginners. Spending a day in the serenity of the riverside can be as calming and restorative as yoga or meditation, regardless of whether you catch any fish.

Book an introduction with an instructor who can show you the basics – we offer our guests a qualified guide and instructor who will collect you from the front door, supply all equipment including waders and take you to the best spots so you can just concentrate on having an enjoyable, safe day out.

Go for a spin

Need a day to rest your legs but still want to see what the local area has to offer? Driving in the countryside is a great joy and worlds away from the stress of sitting in traffic in the city!

The winding roads between chocolate box villages are even better enjoyed from the luxury of a classic motor with the top down and the wind in your hair. We give our guests the option of upgrading to one of our trio of classic cars for the day so they can explore Teesdale, a beautiful unspoilt dale with peaceful rural roads, pretty villages and plenty of attractions to see along the way.
